Sustainability
PL has the ambition to continuously reduce the impact of its operations on the environment. The nature of most of the facilities however implies that energy is consumed for cooling purposes and operating the automated systems in the facilities.
Great care is therefore put into designing the building as efficiently as possible. The flows of goods are organized effectively. Furthermore best practices are implemented in reducing the energy consumption of the facilities. Among others PL has developed systems to use residual heat from the engines that are on site (for cooling and oxygen reduction), for conditioning the offices, technical areas, and the floor heating systems.
Focused on continuously reducing its carbon footprint, PL has the ambition to use as much renewable energy as possible. As a result, PL has participated in the European Union research project called Nightwind (www.nightwind.eu). The projects focuses on ‘storing’ electricity produced at night by windmills by reducing the temperature in cold stores. At its Belgian facility in Rijkevorsel, PL has installed solar panels. In the Netherlands 100% of the energy used by PL is generated by renewable resources.
